Achilles International - Nashville is a local chapter of an international non-profit organization that partners able-bodied runners with athletes with disabilities, welcoming all to the wonderful world of running. In Achilles parlance, running means many things, including conventional running, walking, wheeling, or utilizing orthotics/prosthetics. In other words, it’s any form of locomotion that gets you through the route. Membership is absolutely free.
Many of our athletes come to Achilles thinking that they can’t run, but Achilles shows them that they CAN, no matter their mode of running or speed. Many Achilles athletes run weekly, both at Achilles workouts held every Wednesday evening, and more throughout the week as races approach.
Since the first workout in April of 2012, Nashville’s chapter has become the fastest growing chapter in the country, and the second largest behind the flagship chapter in New York. Achilles Nashville athletes have run in dozens of races, including the Country Music Half Marathon, New York Marathon, Nashville Women’s Half Marathon, Boston Marathon, Back To Football Titans 5K, Mayors 5K, Franklin Classic, and the Boulevard Bolt, just to highlight a few. Achilles Nashville athlete Joe Shaw became the first visually impaired athlete in the state of Tennessee to complete the Warrior Dash in October of 2013, and again in 2014.
People join Achilles with many goals: to improve physical strength, to build confidence, or to help someone achieve their dream. All of our members and athletes work hard to achieve them.
But something else happens at Achilles that few expect, but everyone cherishes. It is the sense of friendship, encouragement, and community that people find with Achilles. In training and racing together, athletes with disabilities and able-bodied athletes learn to support each other and focus on what brings them together, rather than what might keep them apart. We would love for you to follow us on Facebook to keep up with our chapter and learn more about our athletes and guides.
